Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Overview

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain reprocess and integrate traumatic or distressing memories, emotions, and patterns. It uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) to reduce the emotional intensity of past experiences. The approach can be effective for a wide range of concerns and allows individuals to experience meaningful change without needing to rely solely on traditional talk-based methods.

Patient Experience

EMDR can be especially helpful when traditional talk therapy hasn’t provided enough relief or when a more experiential, less verbally demanding approach feels right for the individual. It is effective for a wide range of concerns, including trauma, depression, relationship challenges, anxiety, and long-standing emotional patterns. EMDR supports people in moving past stuck points so they can feel more grounded, balanced, and emotionally regulated. Many clients find that it helps them access meaningful change in a way that feels manageable and empowering.

Our Approach

At Segel Psychological Center, EMDR is provided by an EMDRIA-trained clinician with extensive experience in trauma treatment. The therapeutic setting emphasizes emotional safety and thoughtful pacing. This supportive structure helps individuals process experiences and emotions in a secure and steady manner.
